Increase environmental engagement in Mexico through an interactive map of voices and community actions
Project BackgroundThe Stockholm+50 forum brought together people, communities, organizations and governments from around the world in the city of Stockholm, Sweden on June 2-3, 2022 to commemorate 50 years of global action for the environment. Part of the preparations for this meeting included a series of consultations in countries around the world to gather the voices of all the actors that contribute to and accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
In Mexico, different participation mechanisms were developed, including an online survey, a digital discussion forums, and workshops with people from indigenous communities, youth, the private sector, and civil society. Specific dialogues between women were important to have a deeper understanding of women’s perspectives, experiences, and ideas facing environmental problems. Throughout the consultation, voice and video recordings were part of the process to identify community actions that were included in an interactive map. Social networks, regional forums, subway system adds, and other outlets were used to promote participation in the survey, resulting in a nationwide engagement of more that 1,300 people in 31 of the 32 states. The timeframe of the data collection was that of the consultation.
The technology used was mostly digital and mobile surveys, with the exception of collective intelligence paper templates for the regional workshops. The use of voice and video recordings was done using VideoAsk and then visualized in an Openstreet map online that was embedded in different websites.
To process the information, a quantitative and qualitative analysis was done. This analysis included segregated analysis differentiated by gender and, among the insights, it is highlighted the importance of public spaces for enabling collective organizations and actions, among those who responded. Also women identified the importance of collaboration, communication and education to create a faster transformation.
